The collection represents the "best and the brightest" of American achievements in the arts between 1740 and 1825. You will find furniture, silver, paintings, porcelain and other decorative objects in this exhibit. Highlights included in the collection are a Gilbert Stuart portrait of George Washington, silver pieces made by Paul Revere, a portrait of Thomas Jefferson attributed to Charles Wilson Peale and the View of Boston Harbor by Fitz Hugh Lane.
The exhibition is organized by the Trust for Museum Exhibitions in association with the U.S. Department of State. Normally, you would have to travel quite a distance to see an exhibit of this caliber. Huntsville is one of only eight museums hosting this prestigious collection. There are only two more stops for the exhibit after Huntsville on July 18, 2004: The Sioux City Art Center in Iowa (August 13-October 10) and the final showing will be at Maine's Portland Museum of Art (Nov.4, 2004-Jan.2,2005.
What better way to show your patriotism this July 4th but with a visit to the "Becoming a Nation" exhibit at the Huntsville Museum of Art! For more information, contact the Huntsville Museum of Art or call 256.535.4350 or 1.800.786.9095.
