In July 1956, Egyptian President Gamel Abdel Nasser changed the course of politics and history in his country. Against the advice of his cabinet members, and in defiance of the Western powers, Nasser boldly announced his controversial plan to nationalize the Suez Canal in order to finance construction of the Aswan Dam.
