As a young physician, Dr. Evans became interested in art in the 1960's as he traveled around the world in the Navy. He noticed an absence of African American artists and subjects. He began to collect seriously in the 1970's. His criteria was simple in the beginning: "I decided that every piece of art I would buy henceforth would have a black person in it."
