If you haven't been to the Madison County Nature Trail, you'll be pleasantly surprised. It was built in 1975 and is celebrating its 30th Anniversary. There is a pavilion, plenty of picnic tables, wooden rocking chairs, restrooms, a small chapel, Charles Green's (whom Green Mountain was named after) log cabin, Sky Lake (where only seniors and youth are allowed to fish), and a 2.2 mile walking trail. There is a labeled braille trail to help the blind enjoy the sounds and smells of nature. Recently a senior trail became a new addition to the premises, featuring an easy path close to the pavilion with two benches for resting.
I keep tabs on Green Mountain's little treasure and have taken several photos from time to time. After all, like they say: a picture is worth a thousand words. When we got one of our rare snowfalls, I couldn't resist some pictures to highlight the occasion. I took some more pictures on a recent visit.
Butch Chaffin oversees the Madison County Nature Trail and is usually around to answer questions and assistance visitors. The trail is free to the public and open from 7:00 a.m. until 30 minutes before sunset year round. It is located on top of Green Mountain. Look for the sign on your right and enjoy your stay!
