The English Bulldog became the official Mascot of the Marine Corps a short time after the battle at Belleau Wood. During the fight the Germans feared the Marines ferocity because the "Marines kept coming like teufelhundens" or devil dogs.

Cledus was born and grew up right here on the outskirts of Huntsville. Staff Sgt. C. Nicole Gaines was stationed at Redstone and recommended that the Marine Corps here get a Mascot. The Commanding Officer agreed to "try out a Mascot" and see how it works.

A fellow Marine and Staff Sgt. C. Nicole Gaines drove out to meet Cledus and came back to the office with him that day. Cledus has served as the Marine Corps Detachment, Redstone Mascot ever since and was given the additional name K-Bar.

The Ammunition Technician student Marines at Redstone cared for Cledus every evening and weekend while Staff Sgt. C. Nicole Gaines took care of Cledus during the day in the Admin office. Cledus would sleep all day, wake up around 3 pm, and walk to the front desk and wait on the students to get out of class.

Every evening the detachment is guarded by two "duties". Each day the two students who had duty that particular day would come to the Admin office directly after school to get the Mascot. Cledus would sit up at the duty desk all night with the two duties. The student Marines seemed to enjoy having Cledus around. For most of them it was their first time away from home and having a dog around helped.

Around June of 2005, Cledus started losing all of his hair and after a whole slew of tests he was diagnosed with a thyroid problem. Staff Sgt. C. Nicole Gaines has cared for Cledus at home during the evenings and weekends since his medical problems and in order to ensure correct administration of his medicine. Cledus still goes to work every day at the Det and attends many events.

Cledus K. Bar was promoted to Private First Class in May of 2004 and to Lance Corporal in January of 2005. After attending numerous events to include Balls, graduations, retirements, change of commands, and Marine Det sporting events to name a few, he was most recently promoted to Corporal.

Besides being the best dog in the world, he is also an AKC registered English Bulldog with champion bloodlines. He never to sire any pups because his girlfriend Bertha lives in Belgium. She is too busy winning World Bulldog Championships to meet with Cledus just yet.
