Donnell House Christmas

National Register of Historic Places

By

The Donnell House, located on the Athens Middle School campus, was built in 1845 by a 61-year-old Cumberland Presbyterian minister, Robert Donnell. Union troops stayed at the house in the 1860s during the Civil War and it also served as a high school at one time.

Each year people from the surrounding areas, Huntsville, Decatur, and Athens, decorate the house for Christmas. Mantles, stair rails, and trees, everything is decorated.

The funds raised from the Festival of Trees events will be used for repairs and maintenance on the Donnell House. The 2006 Festival of Trees Tours are from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Nov. 17, 18, 24, and 25, and from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. on Nov. 19, 23, and 26. Admission is $6 for Adults, $3 for children 3 to 12 years of age and children 2 years of age and under are free.

This is a fabulous way to get in the Christmas Spirit! The Donnell House is located at 601 1/2 S. Clinton in Athens. For more information, call 256-232-0743.
