In 50 years of Rockets and Spacecraft , Orville Driver says:

"When President Kennedy made the announcement in early 1960 that we would send a man to the moon and return him safely to the earth in this decade, there were no test facilities available for testing the vehicle stages. Neither were there any deisn physical performance parameters known. MSFC was given the responsibilities for the vehicle propulsion systems and the first stage development and flight acceptance testing."

I remember growing up in Huntsville in the 60's where loud noises and the earth shaking were daily occurances and taken for granted. As kids, we didn't know for sure what they were doing on Redstone Arsenal, but we accepted it and didn't ask questions. Now I realize that history was being made "in my own backyard," so to speak.
