Needing more space but not wanting to lose the home they love, the Hunters decided to remodel their house in 2001. Because it was built around 1889, the house needed major renovations and additions. By the time the Hunters finished they had completely gutted and remodeled the kitchen from the ground up. In designing the kitchen, the Hunters wanted to honor the home’s historical heritage while also keeping it up-to-date. To keep with the house's origins, heart pine flooring was salvaged from an old warehouse. The heart of the kitchen is a center island that provides a sociable place for cooking, homework and conversation. To achieve French undertones the Fowlers used honed marble on the island, countertops and bar, as well as the subway tile back splashes. The Louis XV style armoire and antique iron light fixtures lend to the ambience, as does the European antique fire back used as a backsplash above the stove. The stainless steel hood was custom designed to accent the fire back. The Hunters chose stainless steel appliances to create a more modern feel. Stainless steel appliances include Sub Zero refrigerator, Fisher Paykel double dishwashing drawers, GE microwave, and Viking double ovens and gas-stove top. The six-burner stove with griddle is perfect for Saturday morning pancakes! Double sinks and dishwashing drawers allow for multiple cooks and clean up crews! A mix of materials achieves both visual warmth and practical function. In the bar, a freestanding stainless Kitchen Aid ice machine, Viking wine refrigerator, and additional Fisher Paykel dish drawer make entertaining and clean up a breeze! The cabinetry features wainscoting, with glass door fronts for displaying glassware. The serving window, which opens onto the family room, is perfect for serving family and friends during large gatherings!
