"Peter Pan" Celebrates 100 Years...

Cathy Greets Everyone...

The character of Peter Pan was first mentioned in a 1902 book by Sir James M. Barrie entitled "The Little White Bird." In 1904, the character was perfected and written into a full length play entitled "Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up." James Barrie had no children of his own but loved to play with the children of his friends.

The role of "Peter Pan" has continued to be played by grown women: Pauline Chase, Jean Forbes-Robertson, Hayley Mills and Maggie Smith in London; Maude Adams, Marilyn Miller, Eva La Gallienne, Jean Arthur, Mary Martin, Sandy Duncan and Cathy Rigby on Broadway. The first musical version came to New York in 1950. Four years later, another musical version (the one recently in Huntsville) opened on Broadway.

In 1929, the author James Barrie presented all rights to "Peter Pan" to the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children in London, which continues to receive income from all of the various productions of "Peter Pan" mounted all over the world.
