Huntsville Botanical Garden Builds Cake for City

By Jean Brandau, About.com

Happy 200th Birthday, Huntsville!

Happy 200th Birthday, Huntsville!

The Huntsville Botanical Garden has made a beautiful, if not tasty, cake in honor of Huntsville's 200th birthday. Garden employees, Sherry (in the photo), along with Rusty, did most of the work to "bake" this three-layer masterpiece.

The plants used for the cake are pink and white begonias on a 10 inch thick frame of unshredded peat moss supported by chicken wires and 1" square welded pipes. The cake contains at least 1,200 plants and measures 20’ x 16’. The cake is located close to the Historic Dogwood, just beyond the Aquatic Garden, the cake will be ‘left out in the rain’ throughout the summer. The cake took a team of 12, three weeks to assemble.
