Dolce's Muffaletta Sandwich

Jean Brandau
One of my favorite things to do is to go out for a long leisurely lunch with my girlfriends. I waited a long time for Dolce restaurant in Bridge Street to open for lunch...but they finally have. They are advertising themselves as a "quick" lunch...25 minutes guaranteed or you eat free. But I was interested in savoring the food and enjoying some "girl talk." I was thrilled I don't have a 9 to 5 job that I have to rush back to. They were not upset that we wanted to "linger" and didn't try to rush us out.

My friend, Nancy & I devoured their new lunch menu and made our choices. We loved their new creation, Antipastini. These are light little appetizers served in a cocktail glass. One is $4 or three for $10--a great way to share a variety of food with a friend. For Nancy this could be lunch..she's a light eater. It's delicious and light. We tried three of these. The Cold Pasta Salad contained the most unusual corkscrew pasta, Roma tomatoes and olives in a tasty basil-pesto. We also tried the Burrata Sampler. This little cocktail glass contained a scoop of soft, creamy Burrata cheese with prosciutto served with crostinis. Very tasty. The third item and our favorite was the Boursin Marinara. This smooth, flavorful marinara is made that way by the addition of Boursin cheese, a staple in French kitchens. It is served with crispy Italian bread. Just dip and enjoy.

We shared half a Muffaletta sandwich. The last one Nancy had had was in New Orleans and she remarked that it was challenge to lift and eat; but this Muffaletta was neatly made on a soft bread piled high with smoked Italian ham, salami, pepperoni and prosciutto and other goodies. It was easy to bite into and just the right size for the two of us. The Blackened Tilapia was wonderful. It was pleasingly spicy, but not too spicy, and served with shrimp and andouille ravioli. Refreshing!

We were too full to dig into the variety salads, soups or pasta dishes. But then again, that's a good excuse for a return visit. Whether you're in a hurry at lunchtime and need to get back to work or just out shopping and chatting with your friends, Dolce is another fabulous restaurant to try in the middle of the day. They are open for lunch from 11 am - 2 pm on Monday through Friday. For a reservation or more information, call (256) 327-8385. Give them a try, I'm sure you'll enjoy the experience.
