Eagle Weekend at Joe Wheeler

Eagle

A particular highlight for birding enthusiasts will be Eagle Weekend held on January 20-21, 2006. The weekend is offered as a package by the resort at Joe Wheeler State Park.

One of the highlights of the weekend package is a banquet presentation by biologist Keith Hudson on the Alabama eagle restoration project. When the Bald Eagle Restoration Project began in 1984, bald eagles had not nested in Alabama since 1949. Once in danger of extinction, our national emblem has made a tremendous comeback across the nation. Alabama made significant contributions to this comeback.

Other activities include field trips to the Wheeler Refuge, Waterloo, and other sites along the North Alabama Birding trail, and a bird watching Pontoon Boat Ride on Wheeler Lake. The basic package with lodging and breakfast is $130 per person, but some activities require additional fees.

For individuals looking for a more independent birding experience there are also a number of lovely Lakefront Vacation Rentals in the Shoals area. The rustic cabins at Nugent Hollow offer yet another option. Owner Donna Wilbanks provides binoculars and bird ID guides for guests at the cabins. Information and birding guides can be picked up at either the Lauderdale County (256) 740-4141 or Colbert County (256) 383-0783 tourism offices.

Another website of interest to birdwatchers is Alabama Ornithological Society .
