Christmas Open House at Ivy Green

Ivy Green, Childhood home of Helen Keller, Tuscumbia

The final event in the Shoals holiday of history is a Christmas Open House at Ivy Green on December 18th. Ivy Green is the birthplace of Helen Keller and now operates as a museum. Many of the original items belonging to the Keller family are on display as well as items collected over Helen Keller's lifetime.

The item I find most fascinating is the famous water pump where Annie Sullivan was first able to finally communicate with young Helen. The Muscle Shoals Council of Local Garden Clubs makes this free open house possible. See the beautiful live holiday decorations that adorn the historic birthplace and home of America's First Lady of Courage. The festivities take place from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at 300 W. N. Commons, Tuscumbia.

I want to wish one and all a safe and joyous holiday season. I also want to preview a new event in the Shoals area that will take place in January. I'm talking about the first annual Sam Phillips Music Celebration. Sam Phillips, a Florence native is credited with having discovered Rock n Roll, and was instrumental in the careers of Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Charlie Rich and Jerry Lee Lewis just to name a few. Jerry Lee Lewis will headline the event and there are numerous special dedications, tributes and musical performances scheduled. The Celebration takes place January 3-7, 2006. For additional information contact Big River Broadcasting at (256) 764-8121.
