There is an annual event near and dear to my heart called Every Light a Prayer for Peace that takes place on December 9ththis year. I chaired this event 2 years ago and it was really the first time I did anything like that in my new community. The event is special lighting ceremony sponsored by the Florence Council of Garden Clubs, Florence Garden Club, Better Garden Club and the Lakeside Garden Club. It takes place at Pope's Tavern, which is an important historic building for a number of reasons. Pope's Tavern has served as a s tagecoach stop, inn, and hospital for both armies during the Civil War. It is now a museum filled with antiques and displays. It will be decorated in authentic period greenery for the holiday. There is musical entertainment and refreshments are served. Admission is free for this event. On December 11, 2005 the city of Sheffield hosts a Holiday Tour of Homes. Downtown Sheffield is another area of the Shoals rich with history and beautiful architecture.
