The most colorful pieces in the collection are Tingatinga paintings of birds and zebras. Tingatinga is the Tanzanian term for a style of painting originated by Eduardo S. Tingatinga in the 1960's. Artists traditionally used bicycle paint on pieces of masonite to create these paintings. Another highlight of the exhibit are several examples of Makonde sculptures. The Makonde woodcarvers of Tanzania create beautiful and skillfully rendered pieces, which have been shown in museums and galleries all over the world. A few examples of Baskets, beadwork and some utilitarian pieces will also be included.
The Kennedy-Douglass Center at 217 East Tuscaloosa Street is open, free of charge, from 9:00am-4:00pm, M-F. The show runs through February 10th. Call (256) 760-6379 for more information.
