Joe and Linda Wingo founded Angel Food Ministries in 1994 to provide food for friends and neighbors who were struggling financially. The program began with 34 families in Monroe, Georgia (between Atlanta and Athens), and has grown to serve hundreds of thousands of families every month across 35 states. There are no income restrictions. Everyone is welcome to participate. In fact, the more people who participate, the better for Angel Food Ministries because they buy in bulk and volume means more savings for them. The food is “restaurant grade” meats, frozen vegetables, fruits, dairy products, etc. Never “seconds” or “day old” type products are involved. They use “name brand” foods.
Once a month, you order and pay for your food, which consists of both fresh and frozen items. Right now, for $30 you get approximately $60-80 worth of food. The menu changes each month. The hardest part about this, to me, is to remember to pick your food up a couple weeks later. There is only one day and only a few hours in which to get your food. You are asked to bring a medium-sized box or cooler to pick up your order.
Besides the regular box order, there is a senior or convenience box you can purchase. It consists of ten perfectly seasoned, nutritionally balanced, fully cooked meals—just heat and serve. Each meal has been developed with the dietary needs of senior citizens in mind, and contains 3 oz. of protein, a starch & two vegetables or fruit. There are also several special boxes you can add to your order which consists of extra meat combinations and fresh fruit and vegetables.
Angel Food Ministries is a great way to get quality food at a reasonable price. There are no application or membership fees. Just contact the host church or school and place your order. But remember...pick it up on the distribution day!
