By , About.com Guide

Ars Nova is bringing in the big guns from New York for their production of "Carousel." Rebecca Luker, born and raised in Birmingham and now living in New York, is flying to Huntsville to star in "Carousel". Ms. Luker can currently be found on Broadway in Disney's "Mary Poppins" as Mrs. Banks. She was last seen on Broadway in the revival of "Nine" playing the role of Claudia opposite Antonio Banderas. For her portrayal of Marian Paroo in the revival of "The Music Man" Rebecca received a Tony Award nomination, Outer Critics Circle Award nomination, and a Drama Desk Award nomination.

"Carousel" is a 1945 stage musical by Richard Rodgers (music) and Oscar Hammerstein II (book and lyrics) that was adapted from Ferenc Molnar's play Liliom. The original production, which was directed by Rouben Mamoulian, opened at Broadway's Majestic Theatre on April 19, 1945 and closed on May 24, 1947 after playing 890 performances.

Both Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II said that "Carousel" was the favorite of their works together. The play was adapted into a film in 1956.

The musical includes such classics as "June Is Bustin' Out All Over," "You'll Never Walk Alone," and "If I Loved You."

Rebecca Luker will conduct a master's class at Ars Nova Saturday January 27th from 10:00 to 3:00. Viewing of the Master Class is open to the public. Fee for observing is $25.00.
