As I've said before: drama is not my favorite form of theatre. However, I found James Goldman's The Lion in Winter very entertaining. There were enough clever lines and witty conversations to satisfy me and, really, there's nothing more lively than opponents exchanging quick and pointed barbs.
03/10/04 Theatre Review: "Of Mice & Men"
John Steinbeck is one of my favorite authors so it's a treat for me that Theatre Huntsville is bringing one of Steinbeck's masterpieces to the stage. "Of Mice & Men" was a required reading when I was in school. Take a peek into George, Lennie & Curley's work in this new production at the VBC Playhouse. Read my review and see photos on Friday.
02/26/04 Theatre Review: "Grease" Slides into Huntsville
What a treat Friday's crowd received with The Broadway Theatre League's production of the popular musical "Grease." Not only was the cast of "teenagers" filled with high energy, great choreography, and wonderful voices, but Frankie Avalon's presence on stage added a special electricity to the evening and he, as they say, "stole the show."
02/02/04 Theatre Review: "Always...Patsy Cline"
The Renaissance Theatre is showcasing 19 songs of the legendary Patsy Cline in their new show that opens this weekend. "Always...Patsy Cline" is an insiders look at this talented woman and her story of stardom. Tickets are going fast, so call right away for your reservation.
01/15/04 Theatre Huntsville Presents "The Laramie Project"
Theatre Huntsville is bringing a moving drama to the local stage at the VBC Playhouse with their interpretation of the hit play "The Laramie Project." Don't miss the story behind the 1998 hate-motivated murder of Matthew Shepard that gained unusually wide attention for its unmitigated brutality. See how one small town dealt with the trial and aftermath of an event that touched many lives in their community.
11/27/03 Theatre Review: "Jesus Christ Superstar"
Broadway Theatre League is bringing "Jesus Christ Superstar" to Huntsville during the Thanksgiving holiday. Music is by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics are by Tim Rice. This record-breaking musical retells the last seven days in the life of Jesus of Nazareth. The production has been revived with a modern context--no cast sporting the tie-dyes and bellbottoms of past productions.
11/11/03 Theatre Review: "My Fair Lady"
Ars Nova is bringing this delightful musical to the Huntsville stage under the direction of Ginger Beazley. Face2Face Improv director Eugene Banks is changing his usual comedy act for the lead as Professor Henry Higgins. This is a great version of this popular show; read my review along with photos from the show.
11/06/03 Theatre Review: "Shirley Valentine" Finds Herself Onstage
The Renaissance Theatre is presenting a one-woman show on its stage November 7-15. Shirley Valentine is a rather ordinary middle-class housewife. As she prepares dinner, she ruminates on her life, talking to the wall about such subjects as her husband, her children, her past and an attractive offer she has received from a girlfriend to go with her to Greece in search of romance and adventure.
11/01/03 Theatre Review: "Death By Chocolate"
The Renaissance Theatre has a new stage downstairs called The Alpha Stage. Criss Ashwell is producing and directing the first show in the new theatre. "Death By Chocolate" is sure to get every chocolate lover's imagination going. Bake sale during intermission benefits Food Line of Huntsville.
10/31/03 Theatre Review: "Communicating Doors"
This hilarious British farces is one of my favorites. Theatre Huntsville is presenting "Communicating Doors" through November 8th. I'll be reviewing it tonight and have my photos and comments up sometime Friday.
10/22/03 Theatre Review: "Miss Saigon"
The Broadway Theatre League's current selection is the best show in three years. Don't let this new Broadway production of "Miss Saigon" leave town without seeing it for yourself. Everything about this show is superb: the acting, the lights, the costumes, the music, and the technical effects.
10/14/03 "The Taming of the Shrew" Explodes Onstage The Renaissance Theatre is bringing a classic to the stage this week and next with an adaptation of "The Taming of the Shrew." Watch as Katherine explodes as Petruchio tries to court her, marry her and then tame her.
