Who Took the "Pop" out of the Pops Concert?

Huntsville Symphony & Art Garfunkel #3
The Huntsville Symphony Orchestra sounded great at the Art Garfunkel pops concert. However, what possessed guest conductor William Grimes to chose two "obscure" (his word, not mine) pieces from Leroy Anderson to start off the Pops Concert? I thought the whole idea of a "Pops Concert" was to present "pop-u-lar" music for us "nonmusical" geniuses, so we could have a fun night at the Symphony without feeling totally stupid! Well, Mr. Grimes sure let us--well, me at least--down. I thought we were in for a rocking time at the Symphony. There were moments of good fun with John Williams' "Appollo 13," Howard Shore's "The Lord of the Rings," and even, Bruce Broughton's "Silverado," but I would have much rather heard Leroy Anderson's "Sleigh Ride" or "Blue Tango" than his obscure works.

Minus a few glitches, this was still a pops concert that was well worth the money and provided a lot of entertainment. I'm glad I didn't miss Art Garfunkel's performance on the Huntsville stage. It brought back lots of good memories and had me singing "Mrs. Robinson" all the way home!
