Theatre Review: A Christmas Carol

Just My Opinion...

As I mentioned, once I've seen something once, I usually don't go back and watch it again (unless my children are in it!), so I wasn't too excited about seeing "A Christmas Carol." I had also "over-dosed" on theatre and hadn't been to a show in quite a few months. I was so wrong on both counts! For one thing--this show is a new script and not the same "A Christmas Carol" that you see on TV. I had also forgotten how much fun "live" theatre is! I hope you don't make the same mistake.

It was also fun to take my friend's 8-year old daughter, who'd never seen "A Christmas Carol" before and see it through her eyes. (read her review on the next page). I recommend that you take a child with you if you can. They will be enchanted by the snow falling, the amount and variety of children in the show, and the dancing.

The costumes and sets in "A Christmas Carol" are top-notch, probably the best I've seen in Huntsville. I would be very proud to show any guests or out-of-towners this production as the highest example of Huntsville theatre. It seems like all the great theatrical talent in Huntsville has come together to work on this annual show and make it a shining gift to the community.

This is Tom Newton's first time playing Scrooge. He was so wonderful and made the part, including the famous "humbugs," seem so natural and real. Newton didn't play this "over the top." I loved to hate this Scrooge!

All the actors were great in this show and seemed to be cast perfectly. I especially like ballerina "Host of Christmas Past" Rava Gaiata. This sixth-grader was enchanting and feisty, holding her own against groochy Scrooge.
