Concrete Dreams Pictures...Max Russell...

Blues Guitarist Max Russell

I am thrilled to be living among so many talented and creative spirits. It seems that every time I turn around I learn about another Shoals resident who is doing something extraordinary. I have a few more local celebrities to salute this month. Steve Richerson and Jim Torres of Concrete Dreams Pictures shot their comedy short film The Burglar in the Shoals last fall. This January it passed a juried selection process and was shown at the Southern Fried Flicks Film Festival in Augusta, Georgia. The film is now part of the IFC (Independent Film Channel) Media Lab competition. Winners of this competition will air in IFC national broadcasts. Go to IFC Media Lab and look for The Burglar to see the film and vote. I thought it was a delightful film.

I’ve been a fan of local blues guitarist Max Russell for some time now. I’m pleased to report that Russell entered the Magic City Blues Society’s Battle of the Blues Bands competition in November and won the solo division. The Magic City Blues Society will now sponsor him in The Blues Foundation’s 22nd Annual International Blues Challenge in Memphis. The competition starts January 26th and features 130 different acts at various venues along Beale Street. Visit Max Russell’s page on the site to hear some of his music. This is an important competition and we’re all rooting for Max!
