Tips for Week of December 7, 2006

  • Looking for a free 2007 calendar? Robert Schuffert , author of Scenic North Alabama , has uploaded one of his beautiful photos of Virgin Falls in middle Tennessee, which is difficult to reach, four miles back in the woods between Crossville and Sparta.
  • Black bears are regularly appearing in the Talladega National Forest , leading biologists to speculate that the rare animals have moved into north Alabama for the first time in at least a century.
  • The City of Huntsville's website, www.hsvcity.com , recently earned a national top spot in Computerworld's ranking for websites of cities with populations between 50,001 and 250,000, scoring 16 out of a possible 17. A few new features added to the site in 2006 have been: Mayor Spencer's Blog , a Kid's Site , Video on Demand , live web casts of City Council Meetings and streaming the City's Government Access Channel .
  • The Aids Action Coalition will present "Light of Hope " on Dec. 9 at 5:30 on the steps of the Museum of Art. Senator Jeff Sessions will be there. The luminaries surrounding Big Spring Park are magnificent and are given in memory or honor of those fighting AIDS.
  • I haven't done this yet, but I think it's a great gift idea for weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, or your business logo: have your favorite photo made into a real postage stamp . Minimum order is one sheet of 20 stamps for $17.99. It's not to late for Christmas--orders ship in 3-5 business days.
  • Congratulations to Judy Ryals, President and CEO of the Huntsville/Madison County Convention & Visitors Bureau . She was awarded the prestigious Tourism Promoter of the Year Awardby Alabama Hospitality Association .
  • Alabama movie goers can help support 4-H youth in the state and enjoy a classic tale of loyalty, trust and sacrifice by purchasing tickets online to see the new movie version of the children's book Charlotte's Web in theaters nationwide beginning Dec. 15. For every ticket purchased through the www.fourhcouncil.edu , Hollywood Movie Money will donate $1 to 4-H. Tickets to Charlotte's Web will be available for purchase beginning Dec. 8.
