Tips for Week of December 29, 2005

  • If you mention About.com when ordering your Huntsville Symphony New Year's Eve tickets, you can get two for one balcony tickets, usually priced at $27 each. Call 539-4818 for tickets. Offer good through Dec. 31st while available.
  • U.S. Life expectancy has hit a record high: Babies Born in 2003 Have Life Expectancy of 77.6 Years, Says Center for Disease Control.
  • Minnesota is first as the healthiest state because of a low cardiovascular death rate, low overall premature death rates, and lower-than-average numbers of children in poverty. Vermont, New Hampshire, Utah, and Hawaii followed in the rankings. Meanwhile, five Southern states continued to score as the nation's least healthy. Mississippi ranked at the bottom, followed by Louisiana, Tennessee, Arkansas, and South Carolina. Those states continue to see high rates of obesity, smoking, poverty, and persons lacking health insurance, according to the report. For once, Alabama wasn't included!
  • I'm not sure what to think of this: Crestwood Medical Center is welcoming a 40-ft. colon Feb. 24-26 to kick off "Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month." You can crawl through this Colossal Colonand see examples of healthy and diseased colon tissue.
  • Microsoft is offering the express versions of their Visual Studio development tools free to anyone who downloads them before November 8, 2006. The express version tools are intended to allow hobbyist and novice programmers to create Windows programs.
