Tips for Week of April 26, 2007

  • Congratulations to Robert Reeves , of WHNT TV-Channel 19 , and Jacque Gray , local author and historian , on their recent marriage. I keep forgetting to mention it...so I'm just glad I remembered before they celebrate their 25th Anniversary!
  • For all you Faberge fans, don't miss this: The Matilda Geddings Gray Collection of Faberge' is at Cheekwood's Museum of Art in Nashville, Tennessee. The Collection includes 57 rare pieces highlighted by three Russian Imperial Easter eggs, and a number of important functional items, fantasy items and floral works.
  • Alabama is once again receiving praise for the state website's quick and easy access to a whole host of services. The Finance Department was named as one of 7 national finalists for our creation of the Alabama.gov website. Check it out.
  • Plant Day at the CASA Community Garden is scheduled for May 5th at 8:00 AM. CASA is seeking volunteers to help in the Garden both on Plant Day and afterward. Groups and individuals are needed to harvest, sort, and weigh produce, as well as for weeding, general maintenance, painting, etc. If you are interested in volunteering for Plant Day or sometime during the growing season, contact Kelly at the ! CASA off ice at (256) 533-7775.
  • Here's another stat where Alabama is first: Ten years ago, Congress enacted the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) to provide coverage for children living in families earning too much for Medicaid, but not earning enough to afford private insurance. Alabama was the first state in the nation to have an approved SCHIP plan. For more information, call ALL Kids at 1-888-373-KIDS (5437). Assistance is provided in English and Spanish.
  • Blogs are the current internet rave. In fact, I'm looking for everyone's blog for a new category on About Huntsville. If you have a blog , send me the link at huntsville.guide@about.com and I will review it for inclusion. In the meantime, you might find Amy George's Working Wonders Blog of interest.
  • Someone set me straight after last week's comment on a non-smoking nightclub: Non-smokers have been able to go out for nine months to listen to good bands at the House of Brews which is also nonsmoking. 801 Franklin is also nonsmoking now and has live entertainment. (
  • Next time you visit the Botanical Garden , make sure you have your cell phone. The Garden recently installed a unique audio tour that uses cell phones to inform visitors about the various features in the Garden. A 30 to 90 second message is played for each of the 19+ stops around the garden. This innovative program is the first of its kind in the state of Alabama.
