Tips for Week of June 29, 2006

  • I know better....back-up...back-up...back-up...but: My computer locked up on me and I can't access any of my email...so if you sent me something sometime in the last six years that you think I need to respond to, please re-submit it to [b]huntsville.guide@about.com . Or if you have any idea how I can get my email back, I'd like to hear from you!
  • Our regular Events Calendar will be shut down sometime around July 1st. If you submitted an event for July or later, please re-submit it so I can incorporate it into the new calendar format. Please send to huntsville.guide@about.com . Sorry for the inconvenience.
  • The Huntsville-Madison County Hospitality Associationis seeking proposals from local charities interested in being the recipient of proceeds from the upcoming Taste of Huntsville , just about my most favorite event in Huntsville. The charity selected is required to assist with ticket sales and publicity. The Taste of Huntsville will be held October 19 at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center. The deadline for submitting proposals to the Huntsville-Madison County Hospitality Association is July 19. For more information, contact Cynthia Harmon at charmon@huntsville.org charmon@huntsville.org or call 256.551.2230.
  • Automated driver license testing will be available at every driver license examining office throughout Alabama beginning in July, according to Col. Mike Coppage, director of the Alabama Department of Public Safety . The touch-screen system is user-friendly and helps applicants test more quickly. Since questions are selected randomly from a database of more than 800 entries, no two tests are alike, insuring the security of the testing process.
  • Lower high school dropout rates, fewer teens having babies and a decline in the infant mortality rate, helped Alabama move from 48th to 43rd place in the latest Kids Count ranking. The report measures each state's progress on ten statistics, including infant mortality, poverty rates, single-parent families and babies born with low birth weights. New Hampshire tops the Kids Count list.
  • Watch out, Brittany Spears, if you come to Alabama: Starting Saturday, Alabama law will require children to be in rear-facing car seats until they are 1 year old or weigh 20 pounds. Then they must be in forward-facing car seats until they are 5 or weigh 40 pounds, in booster seats until they turn 6 and in regular seat belts until they turn 15.
  • Another law that goes into effect July 1st will punish those who injure or kill pregnant women in Alabama. They could be punished for committing crimes against two victims - the woman and her unborn child. The new law states "an unborn child in utero at any stage of development, regardless of viability" is a "person" for purposes of state laws dealing with murder, manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, and assault.
  • The Greater Huntsville Humane Society , located at 2812 Johnson Road, is looking for volunteers. If you love animals and can donate some time, give them a call at (256) 881-8081.
  • ]Home Buddies is busier than ever and hiring nannies now. If you're interested, give Mary Alice Cannon at call at 882-1299.
