Tips for Week of August 3, 2006

  • "Operation Hero Letters " is a non-profit organization founded in June of 2005 by two young men from Alabama. John David and Adam Smith are students from Clements High School who had a desire to provide encouragement to our deployed and injured soldiers through a long term letter writing campaign. If you know of a member of our U.S. military in need of encouragement, or if you would like to write an email of encouragement, please forward request to letter@operationheroletters letter@operationheroletters .
  • The United States Post Office has finally made a few things easier for us. You can now fill out a change of address form online and save yourself a trip to the post office.
  • Congratulations to the Martha Pullen Company on their 25th anniversary. The company started business on August 1, 1981 and is still going strong.
  • Okay, dancers--on your toes! There's a new ballet company in town. Alabama Youth Ballet (AYB) provides "dance instruction that meets the highest standards of professional training and a solid technical foundation, all given within a warm and caring environment." Fall Classes start August 28 and you can register online.
  • The Madison County Nature Trail on Green Mountain is home to Alabama's largest and oldest Champion Winged Elm Tree .
  • Republican Women of Huntsville is hosting a Fashion Show & Luncheon at the Huntsville Marriott on Sept.13th from 11 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Cost is $25. For tickets or more info, call Dottie Lugger at (256) 721-7792. (
  • I hope we're not jinxing ourselves: The Alabama Bureau of Tourism and Travel has plans for six billboards ("Where America finds its voice - Alabama") with photos of "American Idol" winners Taylor Hicks and Ruben Studdard and runner-up Bo Bice, to be place around the state before the August 21st auditions in Birmingham. After four months, the billboards will be moved out of state....
