There are a lot of things to learn about a city in order to live there successfully. Sometimes it takes years to find out some of the "secrets" and tricks to living a comfortable life in Huntsville. I share tips in every issue of my free weekly email newsletter to make your life easier.

If you know some good tips, please send them to me via huntsville.guide@about.com . I hope you find something useful to you here and feel more at home in Huntsville.

Tips for Week of August 24, 2006

  • It's a tie for three of our most popular public universities: the University of Alabama, Auburn University and University of Tennessee are all ranked #39 (along with 4 other universities) in 2007 Best Public Colleges . U.S. News and World Report determines its rankings by judging institutions based on selectivity, faculty resources, financial resources and retention ratings.
  • Quilting is an art and a passion among many people. The United States Post Office is honoring a small African-American town in southern Alabama called Gee's Bend with a series of ten special edition stamps in the American Tradition series showcasing brightly colored quilts from the area. The stamps will be on sell August 24, 2006 through August 2007.
  • Every time the power goes off, I have to fumble around to find the Huntsville Utilities phone number to report the problem. I learned that if you need to call to report a tree down, no power, leaks or service outages, the number is 53-LIGHT or 535-4448...even I can remember that!
  • Ever since I moved back to Huntsville six years ago, I've been in search of the perfect Reuben sandwich. I finally found one that I can live with. It's at House of Brews Cafe/Pub on North Side Square downtown Huntsville.
  • If you've been remodeling or redecorating, consider donating the leftovers to the Habitat for Humanity ReStore on the corner of Pratt Ave. & Washington. They accept money, also. For pickup, call (256) 533-3267 Tuesday through Saturday.
  • August 26, Interior Marketplace in Hampton Cove is sponsoring a "Dog Days of Summer" benefit for the Greater Huntsville Humane Society , complete with photo contest (sorry, dogs only!) and refreshments. Buy a GHHS membership and you have a chance to win a pet basket full of goodies. For more info, contact Jean Bryan at (256) 539-9113.
  • If you'd like to sell some of your "stuff" on ebay, but don't know how or don't want to mess with it, you have a new option. Snappy Auctions just opened at 2000 Cecil Asburn Dr., Suite 110. They'll do all the work for you. For more info, call (256) 520-3189.
  • Congratulations to the Huntsville Botanical Garden for being named the Alabama Tourist Attraction of the Year for 2006 . The Garden offers more than 120 acres of specialty gardens, trails, water features and facilities to its more than 250,000 visitors each year. Entries for their Scarecrow Trail are now being accepted. For more info, call (256) 430-3572 x243.
  • Don't miss the Football Friday Night Preview Special featuring a roundtable of North Alabama's premier high school football authorities. Hosted by Tom Luginbill , National Director of recruiting for ESPN.COM and lead studio recruiting analyst for ESPNU, the show explores the outcome of last season for all high school classes in North Alabama and delves into what lies ahead for this season. The 30-minute program airs ! Saturday , August 26 at 6:00PM on FOX54 and Thursday, August 31 at 9:00PM on myWAMY, the new myNetworkTV affiliate that can be found on Comcast Cable 8, Knology Cable 6 and on most cable systems.
