Tips for Week of September 20, 2007

  • Definition of a Veteran : A Veteran - whether Active Duty, Retired, National Guard or Reserve - is someone who at one point in their life wrote a check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life." That is Honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand that. --Author Unknown.
  • The Rocket City Short Film Festival (October 19) is accepting entries by experienced filmmakers, amateurs, adults, kids for 2007. Cash prizes are $100 for the adult winner; $50 for the youth winner. The audience selects the winners. Films must be 15 minutes or less. Entry fee is $10. Films are due Oct. 1, 2007. Check website for details.
  • It's always fun to eat out and now you can help St. Jude's Hospital at the same time. A great excuse to eat at Chili's on Monday night. Chili's across the country will donate ALL profits from Monday, September 24 to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital , where little Evan Thomason and so many other children are battling cancer. I hope you will enjoy a night and help the kids.
  • This Sunday, September 23rd at 6-7 pm, you are invited to Trinity United Methodist Church (Sanctuary) at 607 Airport Road to experience Taize , an ecumenical, multi-cultural service, with a goal of bringing together people who enjoy singing as worship, and find peace and comfort in the contemplative, meditative style of Taize. In our busy world, silence and contemplation can be such a gift - one that can bring rewards and renewal. October 28 is the next Taizé service after this week's.
  • The 2nd Annual Swim for Melissa was a huge success, tripling the number of swimmers and the donations for the Melissa George Neonatal Memorial Fund . Their goal was to buy one Giraffe OmniBed - a state of the art bed for critically ill premature infants (they are $36,000 a piece). Instead, with the success of the Swim for Melissa, they were able to buy three. Thanks to everyone who participated!
  • Astronaut Jan Davis will be among the dozens of female engineers and scientists at the Sally Ride Science Festival October 6th at UAH Fitness Center. Cost is $18 for girls in grades 5 to 8 and includes lunch and all festival activities and materials. Advance registration is required. For more info, visit the website or call (800) 561-5161.
  • There's a new contest in town: If the Tennessee Valley shows support for a potential non-stop flight to Ft. Lauderdale, Allegiant Air will bring a direct flight to Huntsville International. All you have to do is click on this link as many times as you like before 5 pm September 28th to be entered to win a pair of free roundtrip airline tickets to anywhere Allegiant Air flies from Huntsville International Airport . Good luck!
