Tips for Week of September 21, 2006

  • This is more morbid than fascinating: The number of people choosing cremation is rising in Alabama, but the state still ranks 49th in the nation in the percentage of cremations, according to the Cremation Association of North America .
  • Arrowsight, Inc. , the leading developer of remote viewing services and software, recently opened a new, 6,200 square foot state of the art Network Operations Center for its Remote Video Auditing service, in Huntsville, adjacent to the Huntsville International Airport.
  • After more than 25 years in the museum profession (including Huntsville's Burritt Museum and Curator at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California), jpowers92@comcast.net Jim Powers recently joined Van Valkenburgh and Wilkinson Properties . You can reach Jim at (256) 653-1066.
  • Remember a few weeks ago when I told you about the new stamp the Post Office was issuing in honor of the beautiful quilts from a small Southern Alabama community called Gee's Bend? Well, for a small town, they're making it in a lot of the news headlines these days: Alabama ferry reopens after 44 years . Congratulations, and welcome to the 21st Century--maybe we'll all get a chance to get up to speed in Alabama soon!
  • I'd heard about Craigslist years ago, but recently ran across it again. It's a pretty simple website with no fancy graphics that lists items for sale or wanted all over the United States. I know, we have Huntsville Freecycle and Huntsville Trader , but you might want to check out Craigs List, too. It's free to buyers and sellers.
  • The new Cracker Barrel , on the corner of Drake Ave. and the Parkway, opens Monday, October 2nd. Finally, we don't have to go to Madison for a taste from the Old Country Store. Try their meat loaf recipe .
  • I wish I hadn't found out this little tidbit: Ben & Jerry's now have a milkshake in a bottle, like Starbucks' Frappuccino . B&J's is half the size and twice the calories, though. I saw Cherry Garcia, Chocolate Fudge Brownie and Funky Monkey. I really hate that I discovered this (I only bought one)!
  • Emma's Tea Room has expanded their lunch menu to include quiche, soup, seafood salad and a combination plate. Check it out and then check to see if I'm there!
  • Got kids? Check this out: 3 Punkins is hosting their fall children's consignment sale this weekend at Limestone Flea Market.
