Tips for Week of September 28, 2006
- Know what's a native plant and what's not? Can you recognize evil privet and scary honeysuckle? Learn about invasives (yes, kudzu is just one of many) by watching "Alien Invaders," a new episode of Discovering Alabama on Sunday, October 1 at 1 pm on Alabama Public Television . Local experts interviewed on the show include Land Trust Board member Amy Werkheiser who is an environmental scientist with OMI, Inc.; Land Trust Land Manager Andy Prewett; and Soos Weber of the Hayes Nature Preserve .
- St. Jude officials announced the creation of North Alabama's first pediatric cancer care and hematology clinic at Huntsville Hospital for Women & Children . Due to open in January, it will be the fifth St. Jude-affiliated cancer clinic in the United States.
- Alabama is #5...in Top States for Adult Obesity ...not a good thing, but then, I was afraid we'd be #1! Mississippi has America's highest percentage of obese adults and Colorado has the lowest percentage, says the Center for Disease Control .
- Speaking of Center for Disease Control , check out their up-to-date report on the E. coli Infections From Fresh Spinach . The closest to us is one case in Tennessee; maybe that's because us fat Alabamians aren't eating our spinach! (
- Don't miss Free Day at the Huntsville Botanical Garden this Sunday, Oct. 1 from 1-4 pm.
- Grille 29 is a new restaurant coming to the Village of Providence on Dec. 11 this year. It's sure to become a favorite eating place for many in the area. This Florida-based company will feature a new concept in casual dining and is known for fresh, premium-grade beef, rack of lamb, crusted ahi tuna, lobster quesadillas, seafood fra diavolo and killer desserts. - Congratulations to local pilots Bill Elliott and Jean-Jacques Malosse of the Huntsville Soaring Club who captured the top spots in this year's GTA (Georgia-Tennessee-Alabama) soaring contest, which consists of a series of weekend races held from mid-March through mid-September at airports and gliderports throughout the three-state area.
- Expansion Management Magazine ranks Huntsville, Alabama as the nation's top community for overall quality of life in its " 2006 Military Communities of Excellence " released in August. Huntsville earned the distinction of the nation's best comm! unity am ong those with military populations between 10,000 and 19,999.
