Tips for Week of October 5, 2006

  • This sounds like a wonderful exhibit: The Huntsville Photographic Society will display a member print exhibition "Celebrating 50 Years of Photographing Huntsville" at the Madison County Huntsville Public Library (on the second floor) at 915 Monroe Street in Huntsville, through October 31st.
  • If you've ever thought of volunteering to be a docent at the Huntsville Botanical Garden , now is the time. Training will be every Tuesday for five Tuesdays beginning Oct. 17th from 4:30-6:30.   • Our tomatoes didn't do very well this year, but the state's search for the winning tomato recipe from each region still had great entries. The North Alabama regional winner was " Tomato Pie " (see recipe) by Rob and Greta Carlile of Carlile's in Scottsboro.
  • The Patio at Pauli's Bar & Grill in Madison is finished and open for enjoyable outdoor dining. They promise to "cool it when its hot and heat it when its cool." Don't forget: They are open for lunch, too. What more could you want?
  • Planning a big trip next year? Then you might want to get your passport updated now. Starting January 8, 2007, you will need to have a passport to return by air or sea from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean.
  • The 4th Annual Masquerade Ball presented by the Art Krewe benefits the Huntsville Museum of Art . It will be Friday, October 20, from 8 pm-midnight at the Huntsville Museum of Art. Tickets are $45 per person. Don't wait for an invitation: contact the Museum no later than Friday, October 13th to make a reservation by email: artkrewe@hsvmuseum.org or call 256-535-4350 ext. 208.
  • Bookcrossing is the world's largest book club. It's the practice of leaving a book in a public place to be picked up and read by others, who then do likewise.
  • Mark your calendars now: the dates for the 2007 Big Spring Jam are September 21, 22, 23 and the 2008 Jam is set for September 26, 27, 28.
  • The Madison Soccer Club will be hosting a half-day soccer camp during fall break. There will be 3-day and 5-day formats. Cost is $70 for the 3-day camp and $95 for the 5-day camp. See website for details
