Tips for Week of November 17, 2005

  • If the once a week garbage pickup has you frustrated and you need an additional cart, you can obtain one for $3 per month. To order a second cart or for more information, contact Public Works Sanitation at 883-3964.
  • Rolo's Express on South Parkway will re-open in January.
  • In Alabama, license plates (tags) are renewed alphabetically by your last name. Since mine starts with "B", ours are due in February. I liked the system in Iowa better: you could chose your birthday or your spouse's, in fact, you could chose both. We had one car renewed in March and the other car in November--it helped spread the pain out a little bit. (
  • According to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center , new research shows that the special training of music conductors seems to enhance the way their senses work together--enabling them to quickly tell who played a wrong note, for example. Scientists hope the research will lead to new discoveries about how music training may change the brain.
  • Starting Nov. 15 all Medicare beneficiaries can choose a prescription drug plan from Medicare . You'll get these benefits as early as Jan. 1 if you enroll by Dec. 31. Call (800) MEDICARE if you have more questions.
  • If you're looking for an unusual gift or why to celebrate special occasions, try PhotoStamps --a new product that lets you take your own images or photographs and turn them into real U.S. postage stamps. Use for your Christmas cards, baby announcements or wedding invitations
