There are a lot of things to learn about a city in order to live there successfully. Sometimes it takes years to find out some of the "secrets" and tricks to living a comfortable life in Huntsville. I share tips in every issue of my free weekly email newsletter to make your life easier.

If you know some good tips, please send them to me via huntsville.guide@about.com . I hope you find something useful to you here and feel more at home in Huntsville.

Tips for Week of November 30, 2006

  • It's almost here: the new Fresh Market on Whitesburg Dr. opens Wednesday, December 6th, with free samples, free sample bag of coffee to first 1,000 customers and a baby back rib demonstration. Go to their website to sign up for a free weekly newsletter and to see weekly specials.
  • I'm enjoying this holiday season. One thing I'm doing to stay in the spirit, is to listen to the nonstop Christmas music on Lite 96.9 radio station.
  • If you're looking for a way to share this holiday season, you can help Crisis Services of North Alabama in two ways: you can volunteer for gift-wrapping (or use that service at the Malls!) or you can donate to their women's shelter .
  • I stopped in A Nurturing Moment store on Airport Road this week just to see what it is. It "offers moms and moms-to-be the latest apparel trends, comfort and essentials for you and your baby." I'll certainly stop in again the next time I need a baby gift. Right now they have 30% off all Christmas items for babies & moms (if you need a fancy dress for a Christmas party, this is the place). They also have 60% off summer clearance items.
  • Speaking of babies, there's a new free bimonthly magazine in town called Valley Babies .The latest issue includes a story about Huntsville's first waterbirth. You can pick up the magazine in local doctor's offices, baby & toy stores, the library and Chamber of Commerce.
  • How's this for some unique Christmas ideas: Meridian Arts Gallery on Jefferson St. is now The Gallery and will be open for! events only. First scheduled event is The Art of Fashion --a boutique art event featuring artistic custom made jewelry and one-of-a-kind clothing items from exceptional Southern women artists. This Friday December 1 and Saturday December 2 from 10 am to 5 pm. For more information contact Dianne Burch at (256) 534-7475.
  • 3rd Annual YMCA Family Health & Wellness Fair is scheduled for Saturday, January 27, 2007 from 10 am - 2 pm. They are currently looking for vendors in the health/medical professions. For more information, contact Karen Petersen at 883-9622, or [b]karen.petersen@ymcahuntsville.org .
  • The Huntsville Hospital Foundation's Spirit of Hope Tree Lighting & Tribute Ceremonies are December 12. To dedicate a light in honor or memory of a loved one, call 265-8077. Honorees receive a commemorative Spirit of Hope ornament.
